Tank Water Heaters

The workhorse of most Essex County homes. Traditional storage tanks work with gas, oil, or electric - reliable, straightforward to replace, and appropriate for most households. Available in a range of capacities.

AO Smith Bradford White

Tankless Water Heaters

On-demand hot water with no storage tank. Rinnai tankless units are energy-efficient and never run out of hot water. Requires proper gas line sizing and venting - we handle the full scope of the install.

Rinnai

Heat Pump Water Heaters

The most energy-efficient option available today. Heat pump water heaters use ambient air to heat water, dramatically reducing energy use compared to standard electric tanks. Works with existing 240V service in most homes.

Permitted. Inspected. Done Right.

Every Install Backed by a Master Plumber License

Water heater replacements require a permit in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. ECPH pulls the permit, performs the work, and gets it inspected - every time.

We work with AO Smith, Bradford White, Rinnai, HTP, Lochinvar, and Viessmann - equipment we trust, from manufacturers we've built relationships with. If your boiler system uses an indirect water heater, we handle that too.

Making the Right Call

Tank vs. Tankless - What's Right for Your Home?

Both systems have real advantages. The right choice depends on your usage patterns, fuel type, and what's already in your home. Here's how to think about it.

Storage Tank

Familiar and Reliable

Storage tanks heat and hold a set volume of hot water, ready when you need it. Lower upfront cost and easier to replace in kind. Works with gas, oil, or electric.

  • Lower upfront installation cost
  • Works with gas, oil, or electric supply
  • Simpler replacement - same footprint
  • Good for high simultaneous demand
  • Well-understood by any licensed plumber
Tankless

On-Demand, Never Runs Out

Tankless units heat water as it flows - no storage, no standby heat loss. Higher upfront cost, lower energy use long-term. Requires adequate gas supply or electrical capacity.

  • Endless hot water on demand
  • Lower long-term energy costs
  • Space-saving - mounts on wall
  • Ideal for natural gas homes

Repair or Replace?

When to Fix It - and When to Replace It

The answer depends on age, failure type, and repair history. Here's how we think about it - and what signs tell us a replacement makes more sense than another fix.

🔧 Lean Toward Repair

  • Unit is under 5 years old
  • First-time failure, isolated issue
  • Heating element or thermostat failure
  • Minor valve or fitting issue
  • Pressure relief valve replacement

🔄 Lean Toward Replacement

  • Unit is 10–12+ years old
  • Recurring repairs - costs adding up
  • Tank leaking at the base or seams
  • Visible corrosion on the tank body
  • Significantly higher energy bills

Warning Signs Your Water Heater Needs Attention

Rusty or discolored water

Rust inside the tank or on the anode rod - a sign of corrosion from the inside out.

Rumbling or popping sounds

Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank - accelerates wear and reduces efficiency.

Inconsistent water temperature

Heating element failure, thermostat issues, or a unit struggling to keep up with demand.

Water pooling near the base

A leaking tank cannot be repaired - this is a replacement call. Act before it becomes water damage.

Why License Matters

Two Credentials Most Plumbers Don't Carry

Water heater work in Massachusetts requires a licensed plumber. Oil-fired systems require even more - a separate Oil Burner Technician license that most residential plumbers don't hold.

01
MA Master Plumber

The highest plumbing credential Massachusetts issues. Required to pull permits, pass final inspections, and take full legal responsibility for installed work.

License #16207 - Licensed since 2014
02
MA Oil Burner Technician

A separate state license required to install and service oil-fired water heaters. Essex County has a significant number of oil-heated homes - and most plumbers can't legally touch the equipment.

Active - Licensed since 2015

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a water heater installation take?

A standard tank replacement typically takes 2–3 hours once the equipment is on site - shut off, drain, disconnect, install new unit, test. Tankless installations can take longer depending on gas line work and venting requirements. We'll give you a realistic timeline when we assess your situation.

What size water heater does my home need?

For storage tanks, sizing is based on the number of occupants and peak demand - a 40-gallon unit typically serves 2–3 people, 50-gallon for 3–5. For tankless, we calculate flow rate requirements based on simultaneous fixtures. We'll size the unit correctly before ordering equipment, not after.

Can you remove and haul away my old unit?

Yes - old unit removal and disposal is part of the job. We handle the full swap so you're not left dealing with an old tank.

Do you install oil-fired water heaters?

Yes. Ian holds a Massachusetts Oil Burner Technician license, which covers oil-fired water heater installation and service. This is a separate credential from the plumbing license - most plumbers in the area can't legally do this work. If you have an oil system and need a water heater replacement or repair, we're one of the few shops in Essex County that can handle it fully.

My water heater is connected to my heating system - is that a problem?

Not for us. Indirect water heaters - which use a boiler to heat domestic hot water - are common in Essex County homes with hydronic heating systems. We install and service both the boiler side and the indirect tank, so you're not managing two different contractors on a single system.
